These are live market (spot) values for pure metal content, not Zeek Gold's buying price. A buyer's offer is normally below spot, because it has to cover testing, refining and handling. Zeek Gold does not deduct any commission or evaluation fees on top of its offer. Your final offer depends on the tested purity and exact weight of your items. Request a free quote for a firm offer.

Understanding the Gold Price per Gram in South Africa
The price you see quoted for gold is the spot price: the market value of one troy ounce of pure (24ct) gold, set by international trading in US dollars. Because the rand price depends on both the dollar gold price and the rand exchange rate, the gold price per gram in South Africa changes throughout the day.
What your jewellery is worth depends on its carat
| Carat | Gold content | Common use |
|---|---|---|
| 9ct | 37.5% | Everyday chains, rings and earrings |
| 14ct | 58.5% | Imported and some local jewellery |
| 18ct | 75% | Fine jewellery and engagement rings |
| 22ct | 91.6% | Indian and traditional gold jewellery |
| Krugerrands | 1 troy oz of fine gold in a 1oz coin | Bullion coins |
To estimate the metal value of a piece, multiply its weight in grams by the per-gram spot price for its carat, or use the calculator above. Stones, springs and steel parts are not gold, so the gold weight of a piece is often less than its total weight.
How Zeek Gold makes an offer
We test every item with an XRF analyser, which does not damage your jewellery, weigh it on a calibrated scale and base our offer on the day's gold price. We do not deduct any commission or evaluation fees, and you are under no obligation to sell. You can visit our Alberton or Springs branch, book an appointment at Sandton or Cape Town, or sell by insured courier.
Gold Price FAQs
How is the gold price per gram worked out?
Gold is traded internationally in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 grams). To get the rand price per gram of pure gold, the dollar price is converted to rand and divided by 31.1035. For jewellery, multiply that figure by the purity of your carat: 37.5% for 9ct, 58.5% for 14ct, 75% for 18ct and 91.6% for 22ct.
Why is a buying price lower than the spot price?
The spot price is the market value of pure metal. A buyer has to test, handle and refine the gold before it can be sold on, so offers are normally below spot. Zeek Gold does not deduct any commission or evaluation fees from its offer.
How much is 10g of 9ct gold worth?
It depends on the day's gold price. As an example, in October 2026 a 10g 9ct gold chain was worth about R8 000 at Zeek Gold. Use the calculator above to see the current spot value, and request a quote for a firm offer.
Are your buying prices live?
The spot prices and calculator above update automatically from a live market feed. The buying price tables are set by our team and change as the market moves, so please call us or request a quote to confirm today's exact offer.
Do you charge any fees?
No. We do not deduct any commission or evaluation fees, and testing is free. There is no obligation to sell.
