Private Clients & Estates

Discreet valuation and sale of inherited jewellery, watches and collections.

When jewellery passes through a family (after a death, a move or a divorce), the questions are rarely just about price. What is real? What is it worth? Who should have what? Is anything worth more than its gold?

Some pieces are worth far more than their gold

Most gold buyers price everything by weight. Estate jewellery deserves more care. Signed pieces (Cartier, Tiffany, Van Cleef & Arpels), antique and Art Deco jewellery, certified diamonds and vintage watches are valued as jewellery, not as scrap metal. When a piece is worth more than its gold, we’ll tell you, even if that means recommending an auction house instead of selling to us.

What we offer

ServiceWhat you get
Private valuationAn itemised written report with a photo, description, weight, purity and value for every piece. Free of charge, and yours to keep whether or not you sell.
Sorting a collectionWe separate gold, silver, platinum and genuine stones from costume and plated pieces, so nothing valuable is thrown away by mistake.
Fair division between heirsValues for every piece so a family can divide a collection evenly, by value rather than guesswork.
Outright purchaseOne clear offer for the pieces you choose to sell, paid by EFT to the estate or owner’s account.
Specialist referralFor important signed, antique or collectible pieces, an introduction to Bassani’s Auction House when an auction will serve you better.
Home or office visitsFor larger collections, we can visit your home or your attorney’s office within 30 km of any of our branches.

How it works

  1. Book a private consultation by phone, WhatsApp or the enquiry form below. Tell us roughly what you have; there’s no need to sort it first.
  2. Meet your specialist at our Sandton or Cape Town private room, at a branch, or at your home or attorney’s office.
  3. Everything is tested in front of you: XRF for metals (no scratching, filing or acid), verified scales, and loupe and certificate checks for diamonds and watches.
  4. You receive a written report listing every piece and its value.
  5. You decide. Keep, divide, sell to us, or sell elsewhere. If you sell to us, payment goes by EFT to the account you nominate.

What a typical estate looks like

An illustrative example, not a specific client.

An executor brings in a late parent’s jewellery box: about 120 pieces. Most are costume or gold-plated. Of the genuine pieces, a handful of 9ct and 18ct chains and rings make up most of the gold value. Mixed in is an unmarked brooch the family assumed was fake. XRF testing shows it’s 18ct gold set with old-cut diamonds. The family keeps the brooch and two wedding rings, divides the remaining rings using our itemised report, and sells the broken and unwanted gold, paid by EFT into the estate account.

Frequently asked questions

Is the valuation free?

Yes. Private valuations are free of charge, and the written report is yours to keep whether or not you sell.

Do we have to sell anything?

No. Many families use our report only to divide pieces fairly or to complete the estate inventory.

Can you value pieces we want to keep?

Yes. We value everything you bring and mark which items you’re keeping.

We don’t know what’s real. Should we sort it first?

No. Bring everything, including broken and odd pieces. Sorting is part of the service.

Will you tell us if something is worth more elsewhere?

Yes. For important signed, antique or collectible pieces, we’ll say so and can introduce you to Bassani’s Auction House.

Who can sell items from an estate?

It depends on whether the estate is still being wound up. See our Deceased estates page for who has authority and which documents to bring.

Can you come to us?

Yes. For larger collections we visit homes and offices within 30 km of any of our branches. We also see clients at our private rooms in Sandton and Cape Town.
